Cinema lovers of the region are in for a treat with the first ever Guwahati International Film Festival (GIFF) ever to be held in northeast India was  inaugurated on October 28 at Guwahati by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Concerned at the rising pollution levels in the State, particularly in capital Guwahati, state owned Assam State Transport Corporation is mooting the idea of introducing green buses for public transport. The corporation has kept its options open and is in talks with various manufacturers to explore the possibility of operating buses which can be run by electricity, solar power and even biogas. Naga Yoga instructor bags 3rd position

A  yoga instructor from Nagaland, has changed the perception  of Yoga being a Hindu philosophy and has proved with enthusiasm by winning a medal in the National Yoga competition. Orentsani Kikon has won 3rd position in the 22nd National Yoga competition held recently in Sarupathar,Assam .  She won the bronze medal in  the 25-35 age category. There were more then 130 participants from each state and only 2 from Nagaland. Orentsani Kikon is the first  yoga instructor among the Nagas in Nagaland. She currently owns a fitness studio in the state.

Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla said the state government would continue to distribute water tanks to the BPL families.Lal Thanhawla, who is also the Mizoram Pradesh congress Committee (MPCC) president while addressing party workers here said, “Water tanks would be distributed to poor families for rain water harvesting,” a MPCC press release said. The Assam Government has planned big succour to farming community by taking several steps for agriculture and its allied sectors. More tigers in assam now

  The tiger population in Assam has registered a growth in at least two reserves since the census conducted last year. Director of Manas National Park H K Sarma informed the media that there were 30 tigers in the park which marked an increase of 16 from the last count.  He explained that the Panbari sector which covered about one-third of the park had also been included in the latest census. Toilet Construction Target Surpassed in Assam

GUWAHATI: Assam has surpassed the target set for construction of household toilets under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) during the 2016-17 fiscal. Public Health Engineering (PHE) minister Rihon Daimary said that 10.54 lakh toilets were built in the rural areas of the State during the last fiscal as against a target of 8.50 lakh.
