WRITERS’ BUILDING MAY BRING ALIVE HISTORY

Will Writers’ Building, once the seat of power and administrative headquarters of the West Bengal government, bring alive a dramatic event that took place in its corridors? If plans of actor-turned-politician Dev alias Deepak Adhikari, who is also the Trinamool Congress MP, and director Kamaleswar Mukherjee take a firm shape, this iconic and historic edifice of the British Raj may play host to a historic `first’ – shooting of a feature film based on the famous `Battle of Veranda (Corridor)’ by India’s three prominent freedom fighters – Benoy, Badal and Dinesh. This red-brick building, f...

Snacks in Gariahat are mouth-watering; variety of fish in Ballygunj is indeed, awesome; the red lentil (cooked mosur dal) in Tollygunj is too inviting to be ignored; chopped chicken in Garden Reach is jaw-dropping; eateries around the Sealdah station are dirt cheap....the food fest for the Bongs and wanderers in Kolkata is simply irresistible. So is the level of lead in them. And if the government and municipal corporation heeds the warnings of the Geological Survey of India, Kolkata is set for a major push into green transportation, as most of the lead in food has been found to be atmospheric. Believe it or not, t...

The world’s most complex machine, the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) – a project in which India is a scientific partner to prove that fusion power can be produced on a commercial scale – is now 50 per cent built, it was announced recently. Carbon-free and environmentally sustainable fusion is the same energy source from the sun that gives the earth its light and warmth. ITER, the most complex science project in human history, will use hydrogen fusion, controlled by superconducting magnets, to produce massive heat energy. THE HUMANOID ROBOT GETS SAUDI ARABIA ‘CITIZENSHIP’

Saudi Arabia has made history by becoming the first country to grant citizenship to a robot. The humanoid robot, Sophia, told the audience at a conference in Riyadh how ‘honoured’ she was at being made a Saudi citizen. The move seems symbolic, at best, designed to attract investors for future technologies like AI and robotics. Sophia was built by the Hong Kong-based company “Hanson Robotics” in 2015. Inventor David Hanson claims the robot is imbued with artificial intelligence and can recognise faces. The robot’s silicon face can reportedly mimic 62 human facial expressions. Sop...

Even in this desolation, the decision to live one’s life with enthusiasm whilst rejecting all beliefs was also heard. A woman from Deoli-Banigram’s Sirwani village, Vinita, lost her husband Maheshchandra. She decided to let go of the painful memories associated with him that hold nothing but tears in them and chose to start ...

WHALE SHARK MAY GET GLOBAL PROTECTION

Widespread overfishing is driving many shark species, including the world’s largest living fish, the whale shark, to extinction, warn biologists. Its global status needs to be upgraded for protection and conservation. India is among 121 nations that are home to this species with continuing global population declines. The major threats to it are fisheries catches, bycatch in nets and vessel strikes. Now, the Philippines, Israel and Sri Lanka have jointly submitted a proposal for the inclusion of the whale shark, found in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans, in Appendix I of the Convention on the Conservati...

AIR CRASH SURVIVOR IN KOLKATA DURGA PUJA

Does anyone remember the TV series `Lost’? It talks about a plane crash on a desert island. That was simply reeled life. But when a group of boys were lost in real life, in a remote snow-filled mountain at 14,000 ft following a plane crash, the world outside presumed them to be dead. It was one such rarest occasion when real life thoroughly beat the reel life. Left with a dilemma that was too shocking and also too real   whether to court a slow, painful death or turn cannibals and prise open bodies of their dead friends and eat them for bare survival   16 out of the 45 passengers on board opted for the sec...

KAHAANIBAAZ: STORYTELLER’S OLYMPIAD FOR CHILDREN

Sit and write on a topic is common for school kids. Writing essays is a part of the curriculum and on umpteen times they take part in inter-school, state level and national-level competitions to show their writing skills. If they get positions, it satisfies their parents’ appetite more than the participants savour on it. Meenakshi Jha Banerjee, a noted Madhubani painting artist, conceptualised an idea to hone creative skill among school children by organising a “Storytelling Olympiad” for the school children named as “Kahaanibaaz” in Patna. Kahaanibaaz (storyteller), is an event to be organiz...
