HELPING MIGRANT CHILDREN RETURN TO SCHOOL

Ithai- The children have seen a new sky- They had no future. They used to spend time in gambling, sneaking into the shops to steal. Such things were their favourite pastime. They are the children of migrant workers and daily wage earners. Who is considered our true friend? Someone who takes us from darkness to light. And what could be bigger than the light of education. If someone holds your hand and takes you to the world of literacy from illiteracy can certainly be called a friend and a well-wisher. Ithai -the Hindi meaning of this word is friend – is dedicatedly doing this work for the past many years.

“I WANT TO GO BACK, BUT NOT TO MY CHILDREN”

When making ends meet became difficult, that is when she resorted to begging. And then when even that didn’t help, she found her way to Vrindavan. Shanti was a mere 13-year-old when she was made to tie the knot to the man best-suited for her, at least that is what the family had told her. Life was as normal as it is scripted for any next-door-married-woman in India. Her husband was a worker at a wool factory in Benaras. They were ‘blessed’ with four children – three girls and a boy. The money wasn’t huge, but enough to meet the daily needs for six. Life was a bright and pretty hue. But normalcy was ...

COLOURS BRINGS JOY TO VRINDAVAN WIDOWS

They sang, they danced, they laughed and hugged all who were around. They threw flowers at each other, they played with gulaal. Defying all traditional barriers and taboos, hundreds and thousands of widows, for sixth year in a row, celebrated the festival of colours, Holi, at the ancient Gopinath temple in Vrindavan on February 27. The Widows of Vrindavan drenched themselves in rainbow colours – violet, green, yellow, red – as they joyously participated in the Holi celebrations annually organised by Sulabh International Social Service Organisation. Sulabh founder Dr Bindeshwar Pathak joined the widow mo...

FRANCE CONQUERS KOLKATA BOOK FAIR

The 42nd edition of the Kolkata International Book Fair(KIBF) that ended last week, had a mixed fair in terms of crowd, the sale of books and the attendant spices and surprises KBF used to dish out all these years. True, the footfalls had been little less this year compared to the last or the previous years, but the new venue at Central Park, Karunamoyee in Salt Lake did not entirely disappoint the book lovers. A large number of authors and other luminaries from abroad who were present at the fair, amply compensated for some aberrations that a fair of this magnitude is likely to produce. KIBF, which has been recognised by...

Onion is being sold at Rs 23 per kg in the wholesale markets of Kolhapur in Maharastra; this is in contrast to the price of onion (Rs 44 per kg) in the markets of Kolkata and the price in retail is anywhere between Rs 50 and Rs 60. Brinjal in Akbarpur wholesale market of Uttar Pradesh is being sold around Rs 8 per kg in contrast to Rs 22 in Kolkata; retail price of brinjal in Kolkata is between Rs  40 and 45. Potato’s wholesale price in West Bengal is Rs 3.80 as against Rs 5 in any of the wholesale markets in Maharastra or Madhya Pradesh. 89 VOLUMES OF HANDWRITTEN DIARIES, 44 OF RECIPES

A Thakur of an estate and a member of erstwhile Rajput nobility wrote religiously and chronicled the life and times of the royal age. Sounds unbelievable, but it’s true. Amar Singh, Thakur of Kanota and Commander of the erstwhile Jaipur State Force, wrote diaries for 44 years -- between 1898 and 1942 -- without fail, except for one day when he had fallen from a horse and was unwell. His passion for writing diaries has eventually gone on to become a world record as the longest diaries ever written. Those diaries can still be found preserved at Kanota Museum, located some 15 km east of Jaipur, on the Agr...

RESURRECTION OF DANISH LINK TO CALCUTTA

Come April and the tiny muffasil town Srerampore — about 35 km from Kolkata on the Grand Trunk Road in Hooghly district— will etch its name in the tourist map of West Bengal, restoring a missing link with 18th century Denmark. A 235-year-old Danish tavern in Srerampore, a former colony of Denmark in West Bengal, has been resurrected from the ruins and is now poised for rebirth as a riverside cafe. It will also have a bakery, handicrafts shop and lodging facilities and is likely to be inaugurated shortly with much pomp and grandeur. This is the place where the Hoogly river( also known as Ganga) narrows down a b...

WRITERS’ BUILDING MAY BRING ALIVE HISTORY

Will Writers’ Building, once the seat of power and administrative headquarters of the West Bengal government, bring alive a dramatic event that took place in its corridors? If plans of actor-turned-politician Dev alias Deepak Adhikari, who is also the Trinamool Congress MP, and director Kamaleswar Mukherjee take a firm shape, this iconic and historic edifice of the British Raj may play host to a historic `first’ – shooting of a feature film based on the famous `Battle of Veranda (Corridor)’ by India’s three prominent freedom fighters – Benoy, Badal and Dinesh. This red-brick building, f...

The Dragon, you see, holds and protects the Gem, the essence of Chinese culture. And in the City of Joy, Kolkata, the Dragon has held forth, because for the dwindling population of Chinese residents of the city, the school teaching Mandarin will be reopened. Snacks in Gariahat are mouth-watering; variety of fish in Ballygunj is indeed, awesome; the red lentil (cooked mosur dal) in Tollygunj is too inviting to be ignored; chopped chicken in Garden Reach is jaw-dropping; eateries around the Sealdah station are dirt cheap....the food fest for the Bongs and wanderers in Kolkata is simply irresistible. So is the level of lead in them. And if the government and municipal corporation heeds the warnings of the Geological Survey of India, Kolkata is set for a major push into green transportation, as most of the lead in food has been found to be atmospheric. Believe it or not, t...

The world’s most complex machine, the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) – a project in which India is a scientific partner to prove that fusion power can be produced on a commercial scale – is now 50 per cent built, it was announced recently. Carbon-free and environmentally sustainable fusion is the same energy source from the sun that gives the earth its light and warmth. ITER, the most complex science project in human history, will use hydrogen fusion, controlled by superconducting magnets, to produce massive heat energy. In the commercial machines that will follow, ...
